AAHB Spay, Neuter and Vaccination Policy
If you are looking for information on spay, neuter, shot and microchip clinics, click here.
We will not accept as clients those owners who have
dogs or cats over four months of age which have not been spayed or neutered. This includes "papered" animals (1/4 of all animals in shelters are pure-breds). We have made this choice for both ethical and business reasons. There are 60 MILLION dogs and cats euthanized every year in the US, and as pet care professionals, it is our responsibility to decrease this number in every way possible. My personal choice has been to work at local shelters in both paid and volunteer postions to help the pets already here, and to use whatever clout I have as a service provider to stem pet reproduction. My insurance agent told me that nationally, pets which have not been spayed/neutered, while only making up about 20% of pets receiving professional sitting care, account for over 70% of insurance claims. My personal business experience supports this. These pets are far more likely to have behavioral problems and visits which extended beyond the alloted time due to those behaviors.
All cats, dogs and ferrets are required to have current rabies vaccinations, there are no exceptions. All cats and dogs must have age-appropriate vaccinations for illnesses which can be accidentally carried by human contact (such as feline leukemia and parvovirus). We recognize there is currently a discussion in the veterinary community about possible links between vaccinations and a particular cancer in cats, and there is a variety of opinion on this matter, and that this debate is good and valuable. However, we do not have sterilization facilities in our cars and cannot change our clothes between each client, so it is not feasable for us to take as clients those who choose not to vaccinate their cats.
